To Jan and all the Haagsman family, I was very saddened to hear of Pieter's passing. He was a good longtime friend, and I was very fond of him. I was grateful to spend some time with him this summer in person and on the phone in the fall. I loved to make him laugh, but we also had serious conversations about Leone and his illness. He always called me every spring to ask when we were coming home to Hudson's Hope, and then every fall when we returned to California to make sure we made it back safely. Two weeks before his passing, he called me to say goodbye. That's the kind of friend he was, knowing that we would want that last conversation before he passed. I will miss him very much; however, he was in so much pain physically and emotionally it was heartbreaking to witness. May he and Leone be at peace together now.
