I met Al while conducting oil and gas inspections in the Mike 132, Cameron River Road area. He was grading the roads at that time and we always had a chat when time permitted.
It was a privilege to have met him.
RIP Al

I am a master Instructor Canadian firearms safety, and Al went through a course of fire to obtain his authorization to carry , In our monthly phone calls over the last 10 years, and when John Duncan and I would get up to hunt and visit , we had the very best times with him. My condolences to the Scobie family, saddened to hear of Al's sudden passing. he was a fantastic friend and neighbour for many years. So many memories and stories. His 1969 f250 4X4 with a 428 cobra jet that predates the red one, that he has driven places most folks wouldn't take a crawler tractor! Into the headwaters of Racing river "right to where it trickles out from under a wall of purple rock". Or the land speed record for fort Nelson (on the old highway) into the halfway N4 plant in 3 hours,"yes you have to average 120 mph". "make sure the boot on the 4 speed transmission shifter is in good shape, because when you wind upside down that gallon of gear oil makes a Helluva mess"
RIP my friend.

Many memories were made and shared on the Scobie ranch... there was not a lot that could not be accomplished by hard work and a lot of machinery! You will be missed Al. Brian and Janice

It was with great sadness that we heard the news of Als passing. Our deepest condolences go out to all his friends and family and know he will be missed by many. We were fortunate enough to meet and stay with Al and Diane 20+ years ago and our yearly migration North was something special that we always looked forward to. Our conversations would usually go on for hours and although we were unable to solve all the world problems we were always very successful at figuring out fixes and repairs for every piece of machinery with John Deere and Fords topping the list. His knowledge was unending and being fortunate enough to build “Scobie” super duty truck chains and a new roof and lean to on the Atco helping Al was always a very enjoyable and learning experience. Both daughters met and thought the world of Al and Diane who helped them both with the retrieval of there first animals a wolf and elk which made for memories that they will carry forever. It will be with heavy hearts that we will be heading North but know that Als presence and time spent living where and how he loved will never end. Brian, Janice

I'm deeply saddened to learn about Al's passing. He was always larger than life. I initially met Al through work and consider him a friend. He always put in an effort to stay connected and check in to "make sure the bad guys didn't get me" and we'd spend hours talking on the phone even though it never felt long. Al had so many amazing stories and was equally interested in listening and learning about your life. Al, you will be missed but know that you had such an impact on those who are still here, your memory lives on in the lives you've touched.

I remember going up to Pink Mountain with my Dad Wayne Scobie. We enjoyed staying overnight there and I know I slept in a tent outside. The air up there was so fresh and enjoyable. I know inside the house was decorated with many John Deere items including pillows. Thank you for the memory. Sandy Lee Scobie

Deepest condolences from the Chevalier family, I had the great fortune to have met Mr Scobie on my hunting trip north last year and enjoyed speaking with him and all his great stories, and talk some more about the Yukon and his machines and his axe collection!

I was surprised and saddened to learn of Al's passing. Never even considered it a possibility. I live in Sutton Quebec and had the real pleasure of meeting Al a few times when I travelled to BC to visit family on the Alaska Hwy. Used to see him at the fair when he'd help us with my brother-in-law's old JD D. He was always generous with his time and advice, funny and friendly. Will really miss knowing he is out there.
My condolences to family and other friends that I know will miss him.

My friend AL Scobie
I believe you only get to have a few true friends in life and although he was 35yrs older than me , Al was one of mine and one of a kind.
I first met him pre memory when he was a friend of my dads , then again in 2012 when I started working at Blair creek , he was stand off ish at first until he knew I was John bakers kid then we were fast friends, he would stop by when I was on nights when he was “in a hurry” and only had a “minute” and 4 hrs later still be standing there.
We talked about his ranch and how I or someone should buy it … but it wasn’t really for sale , he loved that place and the price was always just a little more than who ever was offering could afford , I think he enjoyed the barter more than the deal.
One summer we spent the whole thing treasure hunting old farms picking through scrap metal piles and hauling it to my place or his, more for the fun of it than to actually accomplish something.
I spent several nights in the old atco shack hunting elk catching the odd fish , once I packed a few horses in from the Simpson road , the old boys eyes lit up with that scobie sparkle when he seen them horses come into the yard.
After I stopped working up there I made a point to call him at least once a month and have an hour chat with him , we last spoke a few days before I heard he passed , we were dealing on some tractor tires I was going to look at and maybe kill an elk. I never made it in time but that’s the way she goes I guess.
He never made it to the Yukon to mine his gold, that was his plan for all the money from the ranch.
He was controversial as hell but if he liked you , you were his friend and that was that.
Hope you find your gold old friend
